The Court's functions include concurrent primary jurisdiction with the Court of Common Pleas of Westmoreland County for all civil claims not exceeding $8,000 as well as the primary court for all landlord-tenant matters.

In addition the Court holds preliminary hearings for all misdemeanors and felony criminal charges, and functions as the trier-of-fact for all summary charges, both traffic and non-traffic.

The District Justice is an elected position, held by either a member of the Bar of the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, or by others who have been trained and certified by the Minor Judiciary Education Board. The term of office is six years, and the District Justice and the staff are not paid from fines and costs collected.
