Identity theft occurs when someone uses your personal identifying information, such as your name, social security number, or credit card, without your permission, to commit fraud or other crimes. The Federal Trade Commission estimates that as many as 9 million Americans have their identities stolen each year.
Identity theft is a serious epidemic, especially given the advances of modern technology and computers. While some identity theft victims can resolve their problems quickly, others spend hundreds of dollars and lots of time repairing damage to their good name and credit record.
The Murrysville Police Department wants you to be prepared, cautious, and know your alternatives, should you become a victim of identity theft. For more information on this topic, please visit the Federal Trade Commission’s website.
If you feel that you have become a victim of identity theft, please contact your local police department.
